Jean Granzow provided a very generous estate gift to the Ellsworth College Foundation upon her death on June 24, 1999. She was born November 13, 1926 in rural Iowa Falls to Harry and Fern Schultz Gardner. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1944. Jean attended Iowa State College for two years and graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. On October 4, 1964, she married Bill Granzow at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Jean worked as a secretary for many years and later owned a business with her husband. Bill A. Granzow was born at Owasa, Iowa, on August 8, 1925 to Lee and Nellie Reed Granzow. He graduated from high school in Owasa in 1943, farmed, and then worked for the Moose Lodge and later opened his own lounge in Iowa Falls. The Granzows were active in the community and members of the First United Methodist Church and Elk’s Club Lodge #1674. Bill was also a member of the Iowa Falls Moose Lodge and Jean belonged to Church Women United, Sarah Circle, Bible Study Group, Progress Club, Culture Club, Friends of the Public Library, Green Belt Gold Club, and the Iowa Falls Women of the Moose #1108. Bill and Jean are survived by two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Granzow and Dorothy Gaulke and two nephews, Michael Granzow and James Granzow. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1979. Bill and Jean Granzow were very unassuming people. She declined any ceremony relative to this very worthy gift, but agreed to limited publicity to encourage creation of similar scholarships at Ellsworth Community College. The Foundation Board members and Ellsworth staff appreciate so much Jean’s thoughtfulness in making this gift and wish to perpetuate their memory through this biography.
