Roland C. Newby was born February 15, 1922 at New Richmond, Wisconsin to Samuel and Hazel (Dunn) Newby. He graduated from Owasa(Iowa) High School in 1940. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended the GI farm school upon returning home. Oscarolia (Voy) Newby was born October, 11, 1921 in Butler County, north of Ackley, Iowa to Emma Voy. She graduated from Ackley High School and then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls. She taught in rural schools in Union, Wellsburg, and Steamboat Rock. On December 22, 1946 Roland andOscarolia were married at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Ackley, Iowa. The Newbys farmed and Roland also worked for Folkerts and Eckel Construction as a carpenter. Roland was a member of the Steamboat Rock Hoover-Eiserman American Legion Post #542 and the Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Club. He also served on the Steamboat Rock School Board. Roland enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, playing cards, woodworking and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Oscarolia was a member of the Ladies’ Aid at the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church, the KountryKlub, and was a charter member of the Steamboat Rock Legion Auxiliary.She passed away at the family’s home in Steamboat Rock on December 27, 1987 after battling cancer. He passed away February 14, 2012 at his winter home in Weslaco, TX from COPD. The Newbys were members of the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church and were married for over 40 years. The couple had a daughter, Jane (Newby) Doolard of Steamboat Rock, IA, and two sons, John, of Wasilla, AK, and Sam of Anchorage, AK. This scholarship was endowed by Sam in honor of his parents.
