PTK, Liz Matthews Leaders of Promise Endowed Scholarship
Elizabeth K. "Liz" Mathews was born Sept. 22, 1953, in Mason City to S.V. and Helen (Godfrey) Jimenez. She attended Mason City High School and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, and received her master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. On June 13, 1973, she was united in marriage with Kirk Mathews in Webster City. Liz was a professor at Ellsworth Community College and a member of Hampton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed teaching, spending time with her family, cooking, gardening, fishing, shopping, reading, and canning food. Liz died January 26, 2005 after a battle with cancer. She and her husband have two sons, John Mathews and wife Michelle of Casper, Wyoming, and Paul Mathews of Denver, Colorado; a daughter, Erin Olson and husband Jerod of Greenville. This scholarship was established in her memory by ECC Professor Mathematics Marcia Hovinga to provide new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled at Ellsworth in order to develop leadership potential through participation in Society programs. Professor Hovingabegin teaching math at Ellsworth in 1990 and served as faculty advisor to the Alpha Iota O mega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Ellsworth for many years.
