Janet Norene Maddox was born September 2, 1918 at Esmond, South Dakota, to George W. and E. Fern Himmel Maddox. In 1932, the family moved to Radcliffe, Iowa. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1935 and Ellsworth Junior College in 1942. She completed the piano course and studied organ at the Iowa Falls Conservatory of Music. In September 1942, Janet began work at Ralston Purina Company as a secretary and buying department assistant. She retired in 1983. Janet held the rating of Certified Professional Secretary. She served on the board and as vice chairman of the North Hardin County Chapter of the American Red Cross and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Janet was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Radcliffe where she served as an organist, Sunday school superintendent and teacher for many years. She was also a member of Rachel Circle at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. Janet was a lifelong supporter of Ellsworth Community College and regularly provided financial gifts. Upon her passing, Foundation officials were notified that Janet had provided a very generous annuity to the college. Her very private but continuing support was much appreciated and will be missed. Janet passed away August 21, 2002 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. She is survived by a sister, Juanita Dennert, and brother-in-law, Robert Dennert of Cedar Rapids.
