Gwen Gohring was born on February 8, 1914. She married Dewey Gilbert in Tucson, Arizona, in the 1980s. Mrs. Gilbert attended Ellsworth Junior College from 1931-33. This scholarship in her memory was established by her husband, Dewey, with assistance from Bill and Skip Gohring of Waco, Texas, and Dewey’s sister, Mrs. Clifford Danielson of Sycamore, Illinois. Dewey and Gwen were active in the Tucson Country Club, the Volunteer Service group and the Literacy Program at Pima College in Arizona. Gwen passed away on December 13, 1994 in Tucson, Arizona. Dewey Gilbert was born in Ellis Township in Hardin County, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School and the University of Iowa. During World War II, he was a Chief Petty Officer in the Naval Construction Battalion serving in Guam, Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Japan. Following the war, he returned to Iowa Falls where he was the International Harvester Implement and Chrysler dealer. He established and operated the Gilbert Construction Company until he retired and moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1980. His projects included the Kruse-Main Building, and the Wall and Thompson Residence Halls. Dewey was an excellent golfer competing for the Highland Country Club championship several times and continued this activity until his passing on July 14, 1997.
