Robert Welden was born January 18, 1910. He was the son of William and Bess Wilkinson Welden. He graduated from the Iowa Falls High School in 1928 and then attended Ellsworth Junior College. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1932 with a degree in zoology. On June 20, 1936, he and Eleanor Bass of Ogden, Iowa, were united in marriage. Robert and his brother, Richard, were partners in the Welden Brothers Construction business until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Iowa Falls Elk’s Club, the Iowa Falls State Bank Board of Directors, chairman of the Ellsworth College Foundation Board and a member and former treasurer of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls. Mrs. Eleanor Welden was born March 30, 1911 at Ogden, Iowa. She was the daughter of Raymond and Nellie Eastman Bass. She graduated from Ogden High School and Iowa State Teachers College. Following her graduation, she taught school at Hansell and Jefferson prior to her marriage to Robert Welden. Mrs. Welden was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Iowa Falls and the First Congregational Mission Circle, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Culture Club, and the Isabella Literary Society. Robert and Eleanor childred include a son, Brad and daughter, Glenna Kloke. Brad continues the construction business in the family name. Robert and Eleanor were most supportive of Ellsworth Community College participating in a number of fund drives including the Kruse-Main Building, auditorium seating, the Second Century Challenge campaign and in 1988 they established the Robert and Eleanor Welden Endowed Scholarship fund. In 1987, Bob and his brother, Richard, agreed to serve as parade marshals at the Ellsworth Community College Homecoming celebration.
