Max Clifton White was born August 16, 1920 at Colo, Iowa to Archie and Ona (Matison) White. When he was five, the family moved to Popejoy where he graduated from high school in 1938. He graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City, then worked for a defense contractor in Waterloo and a Corvair factory in California during World War II. On January 29, 1944 he married Nellie Peterson at Hampton. The couple farmed for 55 years southwest of Popejoy. Max was a member of the Popejoy Methodist Church, Popejoy Lions Club and the Franklin County Historical Society. He passed away August 16, 2000 at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Nellie Margaret (Peterson) White was born June 22, 1925 at her parents’ farm home in Franklin County to Oscar Wilmer & May Irene (Donaldson) Peterson. She attended the Oakland Valley No. 8 School and graduated from Popejoy High School as valedictorian in 1942. She worked in restaurants in Popejoy prior to her marriage. She was a member of the Popejoy Methodist Church and the Church’s Women’s Society for which served as treasurer for many years. Nellie was also a member of the Hampton Historical Society. She passed away November 4, 2005 at the Franklin County General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Max and Nellie children are Molly Hammervold and son Marlo. They have four great-grandchildren.
