Ira A. “Bo” Nichols, Jr. was born July 17, 1911 in Iowa Falls. He was the son of longtime Iowa Falls newspaper publisher Ira Nichols. Nichols attended the Iowa Falls Schools, Ellsworth College, the University of Iowa and the University of South Dakota. From 1934-1935 he worked in the Orient for newspaper publishers in Manila and Hong Kong and from 1935-1954 owned and published newspapers in Albert City; Beresford, South Dakota; and Monticello, Wisconsin. He also spent two years in the military during World War II. After working for publishing firms in Chicago and Los Angeles, he returned to Iowa Falls in 1958. He married Irene Bell in 1965. He passed away in 1992 and she died in 1984. Nichols’ will stipulated that a scholarship endowment fund be developed in his and his wife’s name and that the interest from the initial investment be used to provide a scholarship to high school graduates based on financial need and previous scholastic record.
