Rebecca Sue (Becky) Jennings was born on January 22, 1952 in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Cecil (Lou) and Estelene Jennings. She attended Iowa Falls schools and graduated from IowaFallsHigh School in 1970. She earned a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Iowa in 1974.
Becky was a very competitive and athletic person and had a strong desire to participate in sports but, at the time she was attending Iowa Falls schools, the district offered no girls athletics with the exception of golf. Becky was a member of the high school golf team and excelled at it. At the time of her death on September 22, 2005 Becky was a youth golf instructor. She was also a member of the Professional Golf Teachers and Coaches of America (PGTCA) and had earned the certification of Class A Golf Instructor. Becky always felt slighted that there were no other sports offered girls in Iowa Falls. There was no extra curricular basketball, volleyball, softball, track, cross country or tennis like is available for girls today; only golf. She was outspoken about her desire to have other sports for girls in Iowa Falls. Becky had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed hobbies that centered on physical activity. In addition to golf she loved skiing, tennis, kayaking and bicycling and took part in numerous Ragbrai tours. This scholarship is to be awarded, at the discretion of the Ellsworth Community College Admissions Department, to a full time, first or second year student who participates in an athletic sport at Ellsworth College.
